What

What is Supply Chain Strategy and Why Is It Essential?

The purpose of Supply Chain Strategy for any company is to define the goals, capabilities, and strategic direction of its supply chain, in alignment with the business strategy. It is also important to determine how it differentiates the company from competitors and deals with disruptions.

Each operational process, or function – BUY, MAKE, MOVE, DISTRIBUTE, and SELL – needs its strategy; however, the overall supply chain strategy covers the end-to-end chain from suppliers through to customers. It also determines the four flows – materials and products; information; cash and capital; and work – while ensuring the integration of the process strategies to achieve the overall strategy.

Surveys tell us that less than half of supply chain leaders could point to their strategies, whether verbal, written, or both. Many report that their strategies are not fully thought out. Most at best are narrowly defined, focused on cost management only. A large number lack any real thought to sustainability, dont address true risk, and do not consider the impacts of inventory and returns on end customer experience. In conclusion many strategies were developed in bygone times against a worldview that is increasingly irrelevant and outdated. In short they have not been “future proofed” and as a result can no longer yield competitive advantage nor create sufficient shareholder value.

We know that each company is different, and effective supply chain strategies must be developed based on optional choices that reflect customer needs and expectations while achieving value. We also know from experience that companies with the best supply chain strategies for their products and markets can gain significant increases in value as the right initiatives are planned and executed.
